Interesting experiences promoting – Part 1: The Pursuit

The chase

I don’t know what made me do it, but I knew I had to chase him.

I had been in front of Davidson library passing out flyers, when I saw a biker coming my way. As if I were trying to hail a cab, I stuck my arm out, flyer in hand, calculating exactly where the cyclist was sure to ride past. Seeing my advance, the biker stuck his arm out, ready to accept my offer. He was coming closer and closer, but ah! Too close! I stepped back to mitigate any possible toe injuries, and in that crucial moment let go of the flyer before he could grab it. I watched the flyer float sadly to the ground, like a leaf ending its tenure with a tree.

But at this second crucial moment, something came over me. I decided I wouldn’t let him ride off into obscurity like my past missed connections. I picked the flyer from the ground, and I began to run after my prey.

It is difficult running after a bike, I soon learned, mostly because they move faster than you. There may also be other bikes in the way of your pursuit. Both these factors were in play as I hurtled forward, my eyes focused on my target, disregarding any poorly phrased bon chance from other bikers, such as, “Watch the luck out!” whatever that means.

After an extraordinary burst of speed, I found myself reaching the biker. I prodded his left shoulder as I shoved the Uloop flyer into the vicinity of his face. He was so pleasantly surprised he almost crashed into me. He skidded to a stop and I handed him the flyer. After I explained to him our site, he rode to class, and I went in search of a towel to dry my face.

A few days later, as I was browsing Uloop, I noticed a bike for sale that seemed curiously similar to the one I so vehemently chased down. It was in fine condition, so I was curious as to why it was being sold. The reason: Owner desires a faster bike.

I picture a terminator-type of relentless run towards this biker. Even better is that episode of the Simpson’s where Homer loves Ned. He’s chasing after Flanders Yugo with two golf clubs and grabs a hold of the car as the Flanders speed away. Hilarious!
